Climate Disaster Survivors

Co-Created by Sebastien Archibald, Gavan Cheema, Chelsea Haberlin and Kelsey Kanatan Wavey

Premiering September 2024 at the University of Victoria’s Phoenix Theatre

We are All Climate Disaster Survivors (working title) is a project in development based on an archive of Canadian climate disaster survivors’ oral histories collected by the Climate Disaster Project (CDP), a teaching newsroom coordinated at the University of Victoria.
With this project, we invite audiences to identify themselves as current or future climate disaster survivors, hoping to spark immediate action before it is too late. Fridays for the Future founder Greta Thunberg observed: “We are not being told these stories that are happening right now—the people whose lives are being lost and whose livelihoods are being taken away—we don’t realize they exist.” Essentially, residents of the Global North are not yet seeing the full impact of climate change and won’t act until they realize it’s happening to them.  We will tell the stories of average people who are climate disaster survivors and cut through this barrier that Thunberg observes.
