Rough Waters is an interdisciplinary performance piece inspired by the history of “Brown Skin Beach” and Crystal Pool, two public recreational sites in Vancouver, BC, and the settler colonial segregational policies and practices that shaped them. Based on archival research, the piece explores recreation, land, and water in Vancouver, how the two sites were informally, yet, inextricably connected, and what the omissions and inclusions of the archival record can and can’t tell us about Vancouver, past, present, and future.
